Friday began with icebreaker games lead by our senior members and leaders. Members ended the night with a delicious cake and ice cream snack. It was then time for bed so members could get a good night’s rest before a full day of fun on Saturday.

On Saturday, members created self-portrait on a wooden plaque and also made a unique set of nature windchimes with sticks, rope and beads. We then ventured off on a educational nature walk where Bennett, Chris, Colton, and Dylan taught the members about fire starting techniques, uses for birch bark, how to skip a rock, and how to find spruce gum. Members also participated in a giant leaf contest and spent some time searching for the biggest leaf they could find.

Next came some fun activities lead by the Caton’s Island staff. Members rotated between an indoor game, indoor dance party, and pellet guns and archery. It was still a bit rainy, so we opted for indoor activities, which were just as fun! Finally, once the rain stopped, members got to create some fantastic looking tie-dye and participate in a large group activity, which got pretty competitive!

We ended the night with a bonfire with hot dogs and marshmallows. Campers then headed off to bed for a well deserved rest.

On Sunday, we had a beautiful sunny day, which meant we could participate in the low ropes course and the rock wall. Members took turns rotating through the activities before it was time for a short church service, then lunch. We got packed up and took our group photo in our tie-dye, then headed for home.

It was a great weekend with a great group of members. Special thanks to our 16 chaperones who volunteered their weekend to come help us out – we could not do it without you, so thank you very much for making this event possible

Congratulations to all the participants and special congratulations to our senior speech winner, Ashlyn Slack, who will represent NB 4-H at the Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture competition in Toronto in November.

Our group had a fantastic weekend and we are already looking forward to planning the 2025 event. Thank you to all those businesses that opened their doors for us to visit, and thank you to our fantastic group of chaperones who helped keep the group on track.

Saturday began bright and early with the judging competition. Members were given 6 project categories to judge including beef, dairy, sheep, forage, crafts and foods. There was also a separate category for our cloverbud members. Our top senior judge was awarded a trip to Agribition in Regina, SK, to compete in the National 4-H and Youth Judging Competition. Immediately following the judging competition, the members paraded into the ring with their clubs for the opening ceremonies. We were joined by MP, Jenica Atwin, and Minister of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Margaret Johnson.

The beef show kicked off our livestock classes while the non-livestock articles were judged in the barn. The beef show ended with the selection of our 2023 NB 4-H Royal Beef team, who all will be competing in the Masterfeeds Junior Beef Heifer show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto this November.

The light horse, draft horse and miniature horse all got to show outside in the beautiful outdoor ring. Light horse members enjoyed a barrel race to end their competition.

Before supper, there was a woodsmen competition where members competed in a relay, kettle boil, cross cut and pulp pits. Everyone enjoyed the events and will be practicing throughout the year to compete again next year.

The evening ended with a corn boil/BBQ, an all livestock costume class, and a fantastic Farmer’s Olympics competition put on by our NB 4-H Youth Advisory Committee member.

Sunday began with our dairy show, sheep show, rabbit show, and canine show. The dairy show ended by the judge selecting her top calves that will be heading to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto this November to compete in the TD 4-H Dairy Classic. Our sheep show also selected two members who will travel to the Royal as well to watch the Junior Sheep show.

The day ended with the Overall Showmanship competition and the closing ceremonies. Members packed up and headed home for some well deserved rest.

Tuesday evening, all livestock and non-livestock projects arrived. Members got to work decorating their stall areas for the annual barn competition. The night concluded with a pizza and cake social. On Wednesday morning, members started the day with the judging competition. We had six projects for members to judge including light horse, beef, dairy, forage, foods, and crafts. We had a special class of items just for the Cloverbud members to judge.

Following the judging competition, members and leaders got lined up for the banner parade to start the official opening of the 2022 Annual Provincial Show. We had 14 clubs come participate. After the opening ceremonies, we jumped right into the show with our beef and goats kicking off the livestock portion of the show. Light horse and draft horse followed the beef and goats.

Around 4pm, Melanie and Mario Bourque ran a woodsmen competition for the members. They had a kettle boil, pulp pits, crosscut, and a Cloverbud relay.  The members really enjoyed this and are already looking forward to doing it again next year!

Southern District cooked everyone a wonderful corn boil/BBQ meal that was enjoyed by all. After supper, the sheep members dressed up their sheep for the costume contest. There were some fantastic costumes that the members put a lot of work into.

To end the night, members came back to the arena to participate in some awesome games, including a Farmer’s Olympics.

On Thursday, the remaining livestock entered the arena. We finished with the dairy, sheep and canine show. Following the dairy show, members gathered in the grandstands for the closing ceremonies. All members did an amazing job. We are excited to get planning for our 2023 show!

Friday evening started out with registration and some games. The night ended with ice cream Sundays and cake. Members headed off to their cabins to get a good night’s sleep before Saturday’s activities.

Saturday began with a craft session lead by Ashley Storey. Members got to paint rocks that were later hid around the island for members to find in the coming years. Following the crafts, Jacob McAffee and Josh McConchie lead the members on a nature hike around the island. The members skipped rocks along the shore and tried some delicious spruce gum.

In the afternoon, the Caton’s Island staff set up three stations for the members. Each member got to try out some low ropes, pellet guns/archery, and a rock climbing wall. In between sessions was a canteen, where members filled up on some sweet treats.

After supper, the 4-H volunteers helped the members tie dye their item that was brought from home. We had three colors set up and the members created some cool designs. Following tie dye, the Caton’s Island staff ran a group game. The 4-H chaperones took on the members in a 4 way ‘Capture the Flag’. Despite their efforts, the chaperones could not defeat the members. The night ended with a bonfire and fireworks.

On Sunday, the Caton’s Island staff ran a short Sunday chapel service for the members. Afterwards, each member got to make some friendship bracelets to share with their new camp friends or take to a friend at home. Finally, the time came to pack up and head home.

Despite some complaints about having to use wooden spoons to eat the ice cream, the weekend went smoothly, and everyone had a good time. It was great to see members creating new friendships and connecting with those they haven’t been able to see in a couple of years.

Thank you to everyone who stepped up to help out, especially the fantastic group of junior leaders that really connected with the members and reminded us why 4-H is so beneficial for all ages.

We had a great turnout and had competitors from each of the five districts and had 11 clubs represented. The Western District 4-H Council hosted this event in Florenceville-Bristol. There were 6 demonstration categories. In the Cloverbud Single Demonstration, first place went to Tabitha Bushhaus of the Irishtown 4-H club. Second place went to Claira Morris of the Keswick Ridge 4-H club. In the Junior Single Demonstration, first place went to Evelyn Folkins of the Chignecto 4-H club. Second place went to Jearalee Albert of the Harvey 4-H club. Third place went to Avery Firth of the Farm Fresh 4-H club. In the Intermediate Single Demonstration, Lilly Blakney of the Farm Fresh 4-H club took first place. Second place went to Adalyn Albert of the Harvey 4-H club. Max Moutsatsos of the Countryside 4-H club took third place. In the Senior Single Demonstration, first place went to Josef Folkins of the Chignecto 4-H club. Edie Hachey and Ellena Rasmussen of the River Valley 4-H club placed first in the Junior Double Demonstration. In the Intermediate Double Demonstration, Naomi and Nathanael Buschhaus of the Irishtown 4-H club placed first. Second went to Kennadi Hayes and Paige Perry of the Farm Fresh 4-H club. Third went to Brynn Reardon and Samantha Montgomery of the Countryside 4-H club. There were four divisions in the Speech category. In the Cloverbud Speech, Hudson Carson of the Farm Fresh 4-H club placed first. Second went to Clem Shantz of the Irishtown 4-H club. Third went to Elle McSorley of the Keswick Ridge 4-H club. Fourth went to Kalen MacLeod of the River Valley 4-H club. In the Junior Speech division, first place went to Grace Ronalds of the Triple K 4-H club. Second place went to Makalea Locke of the Chignecto 4-H club. Third went to Millie Boyd of the Keswick Ridge 4-H club. Fourth went to Kellyn Reardon of the Countryside 4-H club. Fifth went to Dallas Parlee of the Farm Fresh 4-H club. In the Intermediate Speech division, Ariel McKinney from the Triangle 4-H club took first place. Jacey Morrell of the Gentle Giants and Friends 4-H club took second place. Third place went to Hannah Briggs of the River Valley 4-H club. Fourth went to Emily Hol from the Chignecto 4-H club. In the Senior Speech division, each competitor had to give an impromptu speech after delivering their prepared speech. They had two minutes to prepare and two minutes to give their impromptu speech. First place went to Caitlin Riordon of the Triple K 4-H club. Caitlin will get to move on to compete at the Canadian Young Speakers in Toronto in November. Second place went to Caileigh Hicks of the McKees Mills 4-H club. Third went to Kate Coleman of the Farm Fresh 4-H club. Fourth went to Rebecca McDermid of the Countryside 4-H club. All competitors did an amazing job. We want to thank FCC for sponsoring this event. Their generosity is very appreciated.

We began the day with a presentation on Public Speaking. Kelly Power ran a fantastic session for leaders on how to prepare your members, organize a competition, and even taught some ice breakers to help members build confidence in speaking to a group. Kelly also facilitated a discussion on the current N.B. 4-H public speaking rules. The conversation led to several edits that will be brought to the N.B. 4-H Council Board of Directors in hopes to re-structure the rules.

JJ’s Inn and Diner provided a wonderful lunch with four different options that the leaders could choose from.

After lunch, Becky Perry presented her presentation on judging. Becky really engaged the leaders as she demonstrated how she teaches her members to judge. She then discussed the proper way to use the judging cards, Hormel the results, and gave some tips on how to organize the competition.

Leaders then had the opportunity to gather with other leaders who teach the same project as them. They were given a copy of the record book to go through and make notes on what they liked, or didn’t like.

The day ended with a review of the Achievement Day score sheets that Ally McConchie digitalized and prepared for the leaders. She compiled helpful information into a leader binder that leaders got to take home with them to use as a resource.

After the conference, several positive feedbacks were received. It was evident that N.B. 4-H leaders enjoyed getting together and discussing relevant topics to N.B. 4-H. In the future, N.B. 4-H plans to host more conferences for leaders so that there is more opportunity to connect and add resources to their leader binder.
